Deep in the forest there stood a strange black tower with no windows and an iron door. Over the years, many travellers had entered, but none had returned. Bid by those who had lost loved ones, a hero was to enter the tower, shield and sword in hand, to slay the monster that surely lay within. With him ventured his scribe, whose assignment was to chronicle his great battle.
But when they entered the tower, there was no creature, wraith or sorcerer. There was simply a single tome upon a cold plinth in a bare stone room. As the hero opened the book, he was at once pulled into the ink, doomed to be a character in a story that never ended; wandering through pages of meandering paragraphs alongside all who had come before him. He could do nothing but follow the path that was written for him, as escape was not in his story.
But the scribe had stayed behind. Seeing the hero’s name appearing in fresh ink upon the parchment, she reached for her quill. Taking care not to touch the pages, she laid the quill on the book and watched as it too faded into the story. A silver spark bleeding into a world of black and white.
Now armed with the quill, the hero laid down his weapons and wrote his way to freedom, leading the other trapped souls back into the sun.
This is the nib of the scribe's quill. May it serve you when you find yourself trapped in a story not of your making, and grant you the power to write your way out.
