Qui-Lan was a light painter, whose work was in high demand. Though she loved her work, the constant demands were beginning to take a toll; she was often stressed, and no longer found inspiration easily. She had been chosen to paint at the Laird’s birthday celebration, and, worried that she would be late, she decided to travel by a seldom used tunnel that ran underneath the mountain.
It was unfathomably dark, and in her haste she had not packed a torch. She asked the Sun for help, hoping he would light her way. But the Sun passed her request instead to his sister, the Moon. The Moon sent Qui-Lan a lantern - though in place of a wick or oil it bore a crystal which glowed with a strange cool, light.
Raising the lantern, Qui-Lan quickened her pace, but as she walked faster, the lantern began to dim. Panicking, she broke into a jog and the lantern grew dimmer still. Running as fast as she could in the fading light, the lantern went out completely. The darkness was all consuming and, dismayed, she was forced to stop.
But as she paused, it began to glow once more and was soon brightly and happily flickering. Curious, Qui-Lan started walking again, increasing her pace as she watched the lantern. Just as before, the faster she walked, the dimmer it shone until it once again went out completely. She had no choice but to walk slowly, and so she ventured on with steady, rhythmic steps.
At the centre of the mountain she was amazed to step into a large chamber. The walls fell away in great shining cliffs of crystal and the ceiling vaulted up in sparkling, hewn rock. Water trickled with bell like tones down every surface. She had never seen a place so beautiful, and she stopped in her tracks to take it in.
Eventually, Qui-Lan made it to the town with just enough time to spare, and her inspiration finally restored. She performed her light painting and all gazed in wonder at the scene of the crystal cavern she had created.
As it did for Qui-Lan, may the lantern of the Moon bring you comfort in the dark, pause in your haste, and a reminder to slow down and observe, for the beauty is in the journey.
