The stars were not always bound to the sky. They would often descend to the earth during the day to explore, before returning to the heavens at night to light the darkness. But one day, a star was wandering through the trees and met a group of birds in a hollow. They were laughing and dancing and singing with such mirth, and they invited the star to join them. The celebrations continued long into the night and began anew the next day, for birds are creatures with endless energy and joy, and can always find reason to celebrate. Hearing of this, more and more of the stars came down to join in the bird’s festivities, and no longer wished to return to the dark chill of the night sky.

As the sky grew ever darker, the hollow shone with white light. The birds, ever joyful, pranced and skipped - chirping cheerful invitations for the remaining stars to join them. The stars in turn, sparkled gleefully, and filled the woods with lilting music, their song rousing other creatures from their slumber and echoing the bird's mirth through the trees. But the Moon in her high station watched on dismayed. Without the stars, the night was darker than it was designed to be. For too many nights she had been glowing brighter than her effort could sustain, and her strength was beginning to falter. Eventually, she could no longer rise at all.

But her brother, the Sun, had been watching. He spoke to the birds and made them an offer. The stars must never leave the heavens again, for their work was too precious, but in return he would grant the birds wings so that they may fly to the stars and continue to dance in their light. Agreeing to these terms, the birds bore the stars home to the heavens and visit them still to this day.
